Anvil campground was terrible. We stayed there but will not return. The campground was wedged in between a train track which runs almost every hour, sometimes more, all through the night as well. The sights are to small, not enough room to even park your vehicle. They are experience electrical problems, not good water pressure(our camper is 2008) so yea.. The store shuts down when it wants to, and also the pool. There is junk cars sitting around.

Unless you're such a train nut that the sound of a freight train rolling by lulls you to sleep, I'd suggest you head someplace else.

Let me make this point clear, this is not a train off in the distance ... the tracks are right at the edge of the campground by the sites and the train speeds by with quite regularity.

If you're looking for the country campground with the big city rumble, this is the place for you.

2.0 stars2.0 stars2.0 stars2.0 stars2.0 stars Convenient, but LOUD! - from TripAdvisor.com
Anvil is an extremely convenient campground. It was right near everything. However, we had two horrible experiences. One, the campground is right next to, and by next to, I mean literally 20 feet from a freight train line. We were awakened about every hour and a half by an extremely long, extremely loud CSX train.

Further, the manager of the campground we assume, had a huge and loud Halloween party one of the nights we stayed. We were camping in a tent so between fearing for our lives by sleeping right next to a train track (there was not even a fence and the tent sites are the ones closest to the track!) and being kept up by the proprietor's private party, we were extremely displeased.

We would never stay there again even though it is the closest campground to the Williamsburg attractions by a lot. If you like to sleep, do not stay there either. Oh, and by the way, you can't get a refund on your first night, obviously because they know many people will want to leave and demand refund after they discover the secret of the train.

1.0 stars1.0 stars1.0 stars1.0 stars1.0 stars Not as advertised - from TripAdvisor.com
First let me start off by saying that I found the staff at Anvil to be very polite, if not forthcoming. I called to make our reservations and was sure to ask if we'd have enough room for two tents and a car or two on the site. I was assured that there would be no problem with that and, looking at the map, it seemed that the sites were long and narrow, with plenty of place to spread out. So, imagine our surprise when we arrived to find that the site was, literally, the tiniest campsite I've ever seen. Sites were separated by small post rail fence that provided no privacy (not usually required or desired, but with sites so small...) We backed our two tents right up to the fence on one side to maximize or walking space. Our two tents were touching on another side in order to fit them on the site. We couldn't even have a large campfire for fear of a spark finding its way to one of our tents. This we were able to laugh off since Williamsburg is a tourist destination, but the next surprise was not so amusing. As my husband and I began setting up our tent, a train could be heard in the distance... annoying as that was, it became even more bothersome as it came closer and passed within 50 yards of our campsite. You must be kidding! A campsite... a *tent* site, right next to a railroad track! We were beside ourselves. Trains ran all night, though admittedly less often on weekend nights. They sounded as if they were passing right through our tents... long trains, short trains, rumbling trains, creeking trains... You could feel the ground shake. We, and all of our neighbors kept a nightly count to compare and see if we managed to sleep through any. Not one of us slept through a single train the whole weekend. If that weren't enough, there were only 2 showers for all of the women in the campground and we all woke up at the same time because of the 6:20am train passing. Needless to say, we won't be returning to the Anvil Campground. It might be okay for someone in a trailer or RV... preferably something with its own shower and bathroom, but I would never recommend it to a tent camper. Even then, considering the price, you're probably better off finding someplace else to stay... like a Walmart parking lot.

1.0 stars1.0 stars1.0 stars1.0 stars1.0 stars Very rude service - from TripAdvisor.com
I called this campground to see if they had lots available for a short family (parents, 2 brothers, 2 sisters) vacation. We would need 5 sites due to all family members now married with children. When I spoke to the man on the phone he immediately told me that the policy is that he would not allow that many lots be taken by 1 family due to it being a small campground. I did not realize that my brother also called & was told the same thing & the man also said I have already spoken to your family & wanted to know what part of the policy we did not understand. He was very rude. My husband & I have been camping for about 20 years & have never been spoken to like that. So if you are planning to camp in or around Williamsburg, VA; I would not waste your time with this park. There are to many nice parks in the area that will gladly work with you to insure you have a great time at their campground like the one we are now booked with American Heritage RV Park, Ms Jenni set up our family name & allow each one of us to book with our own Credit Card & she made sure that we are all in the same area so we can visit.

1.0 stars1.0 stars1.0 stars1.0 stars1.0 stars More like Anvil Train Station and Dumping Grounds... - from TripAdvisor.com
A friend and I stayed at Avil Campground this past weekend and I cannot begin to tell you how horrible it was. A busy road on one side of a small (I mean tiny) horseshoe shaped driveway. The highlight of our trip: the train tracks on the other side of the driveway. They were active. Every two hours active.

The site positioned campers right next to tents so the dumping of the waste could be smelled throughout. A toilet in the poorly kept bathroom backed up and sewer water drained down the street as kids splashed in it. The only reason I know it was sewer water was a fellow camper giving us a heads up. The staff certainly was not forthcoming with that info.

The staff was less than helpful and people just didn't mind their kids or pets. I would never recommend or return to this campground.
