Great Location - from TripAdvisor.com
|
The Hatteras KOA is in a great location - smack in the middle of the Outer Bank - halfway between Nags Head and Hatteras Village. It is located just steps away from the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound.
We camped in a tent for our four night stay. The tent sites are conveniently located near to the bathrooms and showers. The showers are bathrooms are extremely clean.
Our KOA Hatteras vacation was our first experience camping. It was surprisingly easy. The KOA staff helped make it this way through their helpfulness and friendliness. On our first night, an extreme thunderstorm blew through at 4am. We thought for sure that our tent was either going to fly away or rip to shreds. Fortunately neither happened. After the winds died down, the KOA staff drove around in golf carts to make sure all of the tenters were safe. The following morning we had some good laughs about it. Some of the KOA staff said it was one of the worst storms they had ever seen. Maybe even a tornado! What a start to our trip!
Fortunately, the rest of stay was more placid. The weather could not have been better. We took advantage of an organized kayak trip, $3 pancake breakfasts and the two large swimming pools on site.
As mentioned above, the KOA is in the middle of the Outer Banks. There are some convenience stores nearby, but if you want to cook anything more than hotdogs, you will need to travel 20 miles in either direction to shop at a grocery store. Plan ahead and bring food with you if you do not want to spend $10 in gas getting back and forth from the store.
The only suggestion that I have for the KOA is to plant some trees on the campground. There are virtually none. This would help provide some character and add some much needed shade. The site resembles are large field as is.
As for value, it is a bit more than might be anticipated for a tent site, BUT it is located at the beach. What more can you ask for!
I highly recommend the Hatteras KOA for a great getaway.

Fond memories - from TripAdvisor.com

We have camped here several summers for either an extended weekend or a week since my son was 12, so that been over 16 years. Yes the price has risen quite a bit just like everything else due to inflation. With mention of the high cost of a night's camping out of the way, I will say this is probably our favorite campground especially since it's a comfortable drive from Maryland. With It's location right on the ocean, you do not have to move your RV. The two pools and hot tub are nice and the staff have always been friendly and helpful but never intrusive. The campground has activities including snorkeling in the sound across the street, bikes can be rented here and it's a good area to bike for the casual rider. I too have seen some serious thunder storms as the previous post mentioned. Be mindful if you are in a tent, since the land is so level ,water will accumulate in some areas and your site may flood. But that's camping. As for facilities I have found the comfort stations to be cleaned regularly and they are air conditioned. At KOA Rodanthe you can take in the atmosphere of the Outerbanks with the roar of the ocean and call of the sea gulls, without too much development around you to spoil it. If you go, remember bug repellent, sunscreen and have fun :)

Overpriced! - from TripAdvisor.com
|
Overpriced camping! Bad weather was approaching and Ocean Waves down street was booked up. Quoted $50 to pitch a tent. We rented a cabin for $81 a night. There cabins have no AC. Ceiling fan/light was broken and floor had ant infestation. We voiced our concerns and were ignored. Found more reasonable priced camping further south.

Great to us! - from TripAdvisor.com

We had to find a place to stay quickly as our Christian concert in PA was canceled. We wanted to take our youth somewhere as a replacement trip. KOA was able to place us in their overflow area for camping during a highly traveled time! Just about everything we asked for they accommodated. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We had to move our tents one time but the gentleman that had the unenviable task of telling us was helpful, courteous and very apologetic (he is to be commended). He went out of his way to find things we needed. The only problem we faced was a huge storm at 12:30 am that tore apart two of our tents and destroyed two canopys. The storm did not end until 2:00 am. Our youth were frightened as were the adults. We asked to stay the remainder of the evening in 2 empty cabins that were to be occupied the next day but were denied. We had to sleep in the cars for the rest of the night. This was the only negative part of the experience. Of course the staff had no control over the weather but we felt in this dangerous situation an exception could have been made. Still, we understood. I still highly recommend the KOA @ Cape Hatteras to anyone wishing to camp in a friendly, convenient and hospitable environment! When we had to check out early the staff was apologetic but understood! Thanks to Kerri for setting everything up and to all the staff for their kindness. We will come again given the opportunity!
