What a nice change of pace! - from TripAdvisor.com

I have been staying in the Orleans Trail Resort cabins every year for over 10 years now. If you are looking for a ritzy hotel this is not for you. They are cabins. It is on the lake. Expect lake cabins and a camping environment and you won't be disappointed. They have built a hotel on the property in the last few years and it looks very nice but I still prefer the cabins. Yes, there are only small T.V.'s with rabbit ears. I can remember when there was no T.V. at all and no phones. I was going on a vacation and that did not bother me at all. I have stayed in several different cabins I prefer the back side with actually has views of the lake and sailboats from your porch. But I have stayed on the interior side and this is especially beautiful during the fall. What I like most about the cabins is you have a porch you can sit on and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Also, the cabins have more of a camping flare and it is not unusual to find yourself visiting with people in cabins around you. I have always found the people staying here to be friendly.
I live out of state so it is usually after 10 at night when I arrive. I simply call ahead and let them know. They leave the light on and a key in the room. Not a problem. One time I needed to leave early and had not paid my bill so I simply called and left my card number on the answering machine and the key in the room. Not a problem either. I have NEVER had a single problem in staying here and I am scheduled to be there again in just a few days.
Once, during a fishing tournament, I arrived very late and didn't think about the noise I was making (I don't fish). The fishermen in the next room simply knocked on the wall and I realized I was keeping them up so I lowered the volume a little on the TV. The next morning I met them in the parking lot and was trying to apologize but they were fine. They said they understood. People are so nice here. Remember it is a campground atmosphere where everyone sits out at night and talks.
The rooms have two double beds in them but are a nice size. They are older with window units but have ALWAYS been very, very clean with maid service every day. And for $50 a night what a deal. They haven't raised their rates in years.
If you make it there during one of the sailing regatas you will see one of the most beautiful sites with the lake full of sailboats. The evenings are great for a stroll down by the marina. The marina has boats to rent and almost anything else you would want plus a really cute gift shop. Don't forget to buy a bag of food at the marina and feed the fish. They are incredible.
Fourth of July is incredible in this small town. (If the 4th is during the week it is usually held the Saturday before). Everyone comes out. There is a great parade and in the evening the most spectacular fireworks display I have ever seen. And since I live in Dallas this is saying quite a lot.
Don't forget to visit the Black Walnut Factory if you get a chance. Also the gift shop located downtown and be sure to have a dip of black walnut ice cream. If you are there in September check out the Black Walnut Festival. It is a lot of fun. You will have to check on the date but I think it is usually the weekend around the 20th. You can also call the Orleans Resort. They are always helpful in letting me know when things are happening around there.
In general, I won't stay anywhere else.
