Horrible Service, Disrespectful & Rude Staff - from TripAdvisor.com
|
I would not recommend these accommodations to anyone, particularly large groups. We arrived after 9 hours of driving, half of our group (of 12) went into the inn's store while the other half went into check in. The group that went to check out the store was welcomed by someone making a snide comment 'ugh, not another big group. The other group was met with unprofessional and incompetent staff who argued over the rate of the hotel and proceeded to ignore us while we waited for 10 minutes while they tried to run our card through their broken machine. We were not given directions to our cabin, and when we followed the signs we were direct to a sight that was not ours, followed by barricaded road that we could not access. We finally found our cabin, which seemed to be quite nice even though it was missing the fire pit advertised on their website. The same night we checked in we were told by a staff member that we could 'spread out' into a smaller cabin next to ours that was a part of what we had paid for. Unfortunately, this was not the case. After spending 10 hours hiking Mt. Katahdin, we were sore and tired and rudely awoken by the owner of the campgrounds (The same woman who was argumentative with us at check in). At 2am the owner came in our cabin yelling at us to get out and telling us we owed her money. We were extremely apologetic and explained that one of the staff advised us to use the cabin as a part of our stay (the rate per person per night was already being paid by our group and should have covered this cabin - overall we gave the inn over $1,500 of service for the weekend).
In the morning we tried to sort out the situation with the owner who said that 'no one on her staff would have allowed us to stay there.' Unfortunately he did. We were not offered any compensation, or even hospitable staff. Our vacation severely suffered by the unprofessionalism of the owner.
Needless to say we left as soon as possible in the morning, driving back another 9 hours after only a few hours of uneasy sleep post our middle-of-the-night wake up call.
In the morning when we left, we stopped by the general store one more time and bumped into the owner. As she left, one of the employees made comment that you 'have to get on her good side otherwise she's pretty nasty.' Personally, I do not believe that this is the type of person who should be running a business based on customer service.
I would never recommend this place to anyone, and plan to warn my many fellow hikers to avoid staying there at all costs as they make their trek up to this portion of the Appalachian Trail. As a group of professionals between the ages of 25 and 40, we were treated as if we were hooligan high schoolers from the second we checked into the lodge.

A bit of comfort in the middle of nowhere - from TripAdvisor.com
|
We stayed at the Big Moose Inn for two nights in early August, and were quite surprised to find this very civilized B&B in the middle of the Maine woods. The rooms were clean, comfortable and inexpensive. The inn also has new suites, with their own bathrooms, however, we didn't stay there. Downstairs is a large dining room, with a great menu. Very comfortable with large windows giving a great view of the wooded property. The lounge has a great stone fireplace, which we used to warm up after being dunked on the Penobscot white water rafting. Near the entrance is a little bar (very little), but a fun place to hang out. Breakfast was a simple affair, with everything you'd ever want - including homemade muffins.
Right at the doorstep of Baxter State Park, and within only a few steps of Pemadumcook Lake, it's a great jumping off point for hiking Katahdin or rafting the Penob
We really felt at home here, and the owner & her extended family and friends tending the place made us all feel quite welcome. We will definitely be back.

Not like the photos - from TripAdvisor.com

We stayed 1 night at Big Moose Inn before whitewater rafting. We had a long drive to get there. We were hungry when we arrived, but found that both the restaurant and snack bar were only open Wednesday-Sunday. The only place to eat was a small store next to it where we could get a sandwich or pizza. If you wanted breakfast, you had to pay for a continental breakfast the night before. The lodge and cabins don't look much like the photos in the brochure. There was plenty of room and many beds, but few seats and a 1980 model TV with broken knobs that could play VHS tapes but got no stations. The lodge did have a collection of free VHS tapes you could check out. There was no clock or phone. I would say that the lodge was good for a large group of campers staying a week and bringing their own food and supplies but expensive and not good for a night before whitewater rafting. Better to stay in Millinocket and drive the 9 miles in the morning

Wonderful stay at the Big Moose Inn - from TripAdvisor.com
|
After a drenching thunderstorm and 30 degree temperature drop on our Penobscot rafting trip, we were basically just looking for a warm dry place to stay but we found so much more. The Inn had delightfully cozy and clean (albeit small) rooms lovingly furnished with a antiques, very comfortable beds, a great screened porch with rocking chairs, very comfortable common areas with comfy leather coaches, beautiful gardens and an excellent dining room with great food.
The owners and staff were uniformly friendly and helpful. As two women traveling together we asked for a room with twin beds and were quoted a price of $100. When such a room was not available, we were given two rooms, each with a twin bed, for $50 dollars each, which was fantastic. The free continental breakfast included not only the usual fare, but homemade egg McMuffin-type sandwiches.
We could not have been happier with our stay.

Inn was OK; restaurant was superb! - from TripAdvisor.com
|
I am rating our two-day stay at the Big Moose Inn "above average" for one reason: the restaurant, which is excellent!
We stayed at the Antique Inn for 2 nights. Reasonably clean, but very over priced for the quality of the accommodations. Next to the main inn and across the driveway from the rafting outfitters, so was a bit noisy early in the morning. Close to the road, too, so we felt we had to keep the windows & drapes closed for privacy and security. (Ran the way-too-noisy air conditioner both nights.) The Inn does insist on a 10pm quiet time, which we appreciated since we were driving into Baxter early both mornings. Teeny-tiny bathroom, but pretty well-equipped kitchen area. So-so overall.
So, back to the restaurant: excellent food, top-notch service; charming dining room. Visit Big Moose for dinner, for sure!

Terrible Service & Unfriendly People - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
A group of 12 of us went to the Big Moose Inn & Cabins and rented a cabin for the weekend while on a whitewater rafting trip. I called before the trip to ask a few questions and was told there would be a fire pit right outside our cabin and a charcoal grill. When we arrived and checked in we weren't given any directions to our cabin or told anything about a check out time. We drove around the campsite driving over rocks and roots through the off road campground in my car. After about 15 min. we got directions to our cabin which was 1/4 mile down the main road. The cabin itself was OK, about what we expected. There was a gas grill which worked fine but we wasted all of the charcoal supplies that we bought. There was no fire pit anywhere around our cabin so we built one by the lake in a burned area that was already there. At 10:30 pm we were asked to put the fire out and go inside. The owner, Lauri Cormier, continued to harass us all night and kept telling us to keep all the windows closed and that we could not be outside. She also walked into our cabin several times with permission or even knocking first. The second night we had a fire in the "designated fire area" which was a short walk from our cabin and we were again asked to leave. The next morning the cleaning staff again entered our cabin without asking or knocking and started cleaning and taking the linens off the beds while we were still in there trying to get changed and packed. Lauri again entered the cabin without knocking later to show some people the place the apparently used to rent the place. She was very unprofessional and rude all weekend. We all felt like we were in 7th grade again. The rating trip was great but unfortunately we had to put up with being treated like children all weekend.

Great Inn! Okay campgrounds - from TripAdvisor.com
|
While on a white water rafting trip with friends, we decided to stay at the Big Moose Inn cabins and campground. Unfortunately I was not immediately aware of all the housing opportunities and mistakenly purchased just the campground spot ($11) - however, my girlfriend and I decided to try to get a suite at the Inn instead. Once I finally was able to reserve the Suite (i believe it was the last one) they would not refund the money towards the campground - or even roll it into the suite. =(
Out of our group of six, four stayed on the campground. My girlfriend and I helped them set up tents, but the camping area was a disaster. The fire pit was filled with broken bottles, smashed beer cans, and a lot of rocks and debris (whoever used the site last did not clean up after themselves). We had to request a shovel from the Lodge to clean up the area - they did not offer to clean it up for us. In the woods immediately around the camping area there was a lot of trash (beer cans, garbage, etc..) I would not recommend camping in this location.
The suite my girlfriend and I occupied was just ok. Unfortunately it was cold in the room and there was no way to adjust the heat (you could only make the room colder!) There were two beds in the room and a nice bathroom . The woman at the front desk told us to treat the place like it was grandma's, and the suite we had appeared to be like our grandma's spare bedroom. Old lamps, and simple furniture. The bed however, seemed to have been standing on three legs, it squeaked a lot and didn't seem to be very sturdy. When we woke up in the morning we could hear everything, so we wondered if anyone heard our bed rattling around. ;)
In the morning we had a complimentary breakfast at the Inn, even though i requested a Vegetarian breakfast, the morning cook was not aware of it and so i just got less food then everyone else (they just took the meat off my plate). I was offered another egg, but the service was so slow (possibly only one cook) I didn't bother - we had to leave shortly to make it to the white water rafting launch.
Overall, the stay at the inn and campgrounds was made memorable by the company we kept, not the place at which we stayed.

Unique and enjoyable - from TripAdvisor.com
|
A girlfriend and I were lucky to get a room here after a disastrous reservation elsewhere.
This Inn is a fun mix of old hunting lodge and quaint inn. The check-in area is decorated old hunting lodge(animal heads, dark wood, and little light)but with a very comfy leather couch and big TV. The dining area is bright, light and serves good food. The rooms are mostly on the small side (although our room was good-sized because we needed two beds). Bathrooms are shared, but we had no problem getting into one. It is as far from a Holiday Inn as you can get and if you like quirky you will love it.
The Inn is in a great location to explore Baxter State park and some of their cabins are directly on the lake shore. The owner was friendly, even though she was doing 4 or 5 jobs (college kids had gone back to school).

Great place, good location and great value - from TripAdvisor.com
|
We dropped in "on spec" for a 2 night stay whilst touring Maine. There was limited availability on the first night, so we had to stay in a 9 berth cabin - 4 bedrooms, a large lounge and kitchen. Brilliant for a family with young children!
The second night, we stayed in a 4 berth cabin on the lake front. Obviously considerably smaller, but still plenty of room.
The restaurant - in the same building as the B&B rooms - is excellent and very child friendly. There is a small shop on the corner of the entrance to the grounds too.
We took a flight in the float plane, moored opposite the grounds and this was a great experience.
After staying here, we moved on to the Nahmakanta Camping grounds, owned by a cousin of the owner of this site. The Nahmakanta Camping grounds provided the best holiday experience our family has ever had, but that - as they say - is a different story.
