Big Eddy Campground on the West Branch
|
|
Big Eddy Campground is actually 45 minutes of dirt road driving, minimum, from Greenville. Better road access comes from going to Millinocket by I95 to reach it, unless you are in Greenville anyway. If you are it is a pretty drive, but not for little sports cars. Big Eddy is only a 25 minute drive to The gatehouse of Baxter State Park. It is one of the premier fly-fishing locations in New England. See www.flyfishinginmaine.com and search West Branch of the Penobscot River. It is a wilderness campground, owned and operated by an Environmental Foundation. They are converting to solar power, and no power lines reach this area. I think it is almost what some consider a dry campground. No septic hookups, limited power and water is available to fill tanks. Personal generator usage is discouraged. Not for the large RV's but wonderful for the pop-up camper and smaller trailer variety. One whole side of the campground is wilderness for tenters. Very quiet, and many beautiful spots to visit nea
