Disappointing Campground Experience - from TripAdvisor.com
|
I don't like to criticize state parks, since I know they run on limited budgets and I always support public spaces. However, I recently stayed at the Grayson Lake campground and the bad behavior of other campers went completely unchecked by park staff.
My husband and I headed to the lake for a kayak/canoe trip with my parents. While the lake was beautiful and we had an excellent experience while paddling, the campground almost ruined our trip. First, I understand that there are sometimes lots of kids at a campground, but there were dozens of unsupervised, small (app. ages 3-10) children on the roads, in the shower house/restrooms, and even walking into the camps of complete strangers. My husband left the door of his car open while he got something out of the back and when he turned around, a little girl was climbing in! Children were riding bikes after dark with no lights, creating a hazard to themselves and motorists.
People set of fireworks in plain sight all night. I felt uncomfortable walking by myself because we witnessed one camper following a woman (whom he did not seem to know) after making suggestive comments towards her.
We did not feel 100% comfortable leaving things at our site like we would at other campgrounds we stay at. In fact, we felt so uncomfortable, we packed all of our possessions into our car and took them with us to the marina parking lot where we launched our boats.
I would only recommend staying here if you will not be at your camp much (the sites are crammed together) and I would not suggest leaving any valuable equipment, even in a locked car.
If this had been a holiday weekend, I would be tempted to chalk all of this up to an unusually busy weekend with a campground full of people who do not normally camp (and know proper behavior in a shared space). But this was just a random July weekend with no special events.
