Great Family Campground - from TripAdvisor.com
|
Apple River is a great place for weekend family get-away. Close enough to Chicago, but far enough to feel like you're getting away. Campsites are nice size and mostly private with lots of tall trees. Hiking trails are short but very interesting and with decent elevation change (for Illinois!). One trail crosses over river and the kids love that. Bluffs (70 feet) are quite pretty.
I'd call this a hidden gem for the weekend campers with kids.

A teeny, tiny little gem - from TripAdvisor.com
|
My husband talked about Apple River Canyon when he visited it as a child, so I expected a vast expanse of fields. Imagine my surprise when we drove past the gate house, and before I could turn around we were already out of the park!
The entire place is only 400 acres. However, that doesn't take into account the topography it's actually a lot of space to cover. The river is pristine and very approachable (although no swimming or wading allowed). We went for the fossil hunting and my son picked up a nice coral specimen in the first few minutes. The fossils are literally laying on the ground. If you're a little more adventurous, you can take a whack at the dolomite and actually look between the layers, but it's a great place for beginners.
It's a very nice park for a picnic stopover if you're in the Galena area. The literature indicated they stock the stream with trout in the spring and you can keep what you catch - the stream dries up so the trout mostly do not survive from season to season.
