Not typical Disney - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
We've traveled to Disney many times and try out different resorts quite often. This was one resort that we'll pass on in the future. We stayed in the cabins which inside were nice and what I expected. The outside made me feel like I was staying in a trailer park, small driveway, no place for the kids to play (except in the road), very close to other cabins and no interesting landscaping to divide each cabin. Normally Disney creates an atmosphere of WOW, this one was blah. My son and I took a canoe ride and were directed in either direction. We obviously chose the wrong way because we ended up at a dead end in a drainage canal. There were no signs directing us and the staff didn't warn us of anything. They actually told us that it was a circle. When I returned there was nobody there to help so I returned the canoe to its correct position and went to the desk. They were grossly understaffed and I decided not to log my complaint as tensions were already ugly. Main pool was crowded each day to the point that it didn't seem safe to let young children to go in. We used the other pool which was very quiet and secluded. The last critique was the most un-Disney thing. When I made the reservation I told them it was my son and nephew's birthday. They reservationist said she noted the reservation and to remind them at the check in. I did so at check in, delayed us about 20 extra minutes because the lady wrote kids names, ages and location in a big log book. She said that a big card and balloons would arrive and if the timing was right a character might deliver it. Well not only did a character not deliver it but it never arrived during our stay (three days). We called each day and the front staff seemed very removed from this service and told us each day that they usually are delivered in the afternoon. I will return to Disney but not this resort.

Loved the cabins - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
This was our 2nd time staying in the cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness. We just love the quiet and convenience of these cabins. They offer a little more room that the regular hotel rooms, plus a kitchen because the food at Disney is not great. The cabins are ideal for a family of 4 or 5. Any more than that would be cramped. The restaurant on site is not very good as well. We have young kids so we rented a golf cart which was a must. There can be a lot of walking to and from bus stops. You can drive your cart right to the marina or to the bus depot. They are expensive but do come in handy. There is also a lot to do at the campground. Such as horseback riding, the campfire singalong with chip and dale is fun. You can even watch the Magic kingdom fireworks right from the beach at the marina. We love staying here and will definitely do it again.

Our Favorite Campground In The World! - from TripAdvisor.com
|
We have visited Walt Disney World five times, with our sixth time coming up March 2009. Four of those five times, we stayed in Fort Wilderness Campground (once we were evacuated to Coronado Springs because of a tropical storm, and once we stayed at Caribbean Beach), and the times we didn't stay there, we missed it terribly!
Before I proceed with the superlatives, let me caution campers: This...is...Disney! If your idea of the perfect camping trip is a secluded area with only you and nature, this is not your venue! The idea here is to provide folks visiting The World with a lower cost alternative to the resort hotels, but done with true Disney magnificence.
There is a reason this campground has often been voted the best in the United States: it simply IS the best!
When you arrive at Fort Wilderness, you have two check-in options: inside or outside. Usually, if you're pulling some type of trailer, or driving a motor home, you'll be directed to the drive-through check-in area, and what a blessing! You don't have to worry about finding a parking place for your rig while you go inside to check in! If you're in a vehicle with your tents and all your camping goodies, or if you're staying in one of the cabins, you'll be directed to go inside the building to check in. Either way, the check-in process is pleasant and efficient. The nice folks working the check-in area will give you piles of information about the campground and direct you to your campsite. They are, without a doubt, the most friendly and efficient campground employees I've ever encountered in my 50-plus years of camping.
The campground itself is quite large, but very well laid out. The wide, generous roads are clearly marked. The camping areas are divided into loops. Some are for tents and pop-ups only, some are full hookup sites for motor homes, some are cabin loops, and some are "pet loops" where you can keep your pets with you. There is also a kennel at the main check-in area, with a large leash-free pet area where your dogs can play.
If you are staying in a tent or pop-up, request to be put in Loop 1500 or Loop 2000. You can request a premium site with full hookups, but you will be surrounded by huge motor homes, and I don't believe the premium sites have a pad for tents, so be aware.
Most camping loops have their own comfort station, which consists of the bathrooms/showers, laundry facilities, resort phone, bulletin board with activity information, and a pay ice machine. These comfort stations are spotless, and are renovated at regular intervals. We have yet to be disappointed with them. Be aware that some of the loops might share a comfort station with another loop.
Also, there is a bus stop for the Disney transport buses at the entrance to most loops. This is handy as all get out. If you like, once you park your car at the resort, you need never get in it again until you leave! I know some folks out there get impatient with the Disney bus system, but hey, you're on vacation! Relax, already! You need to be aware that you are not allowed to drive your own vehicle around inside the resort, but only to enter and leave it. In fact, there are no parking spaces inside the resort except at your own site or cabin, or at the main check-in area.
The buses are divided into two categories: those that run inside Fort Wilderness, and those that take you out of Fort Wilderness. The buses that run out of Fort Wilderness take you to the various theme parks or to Downtown Disney. The ones that run inside are color coded to the various areas of the campground, and are strictly for internal transport. They can take you to your camping loop, or to the main check-in area, or to the two main "entertainment" areas inside the resort: The Settlement area and the Meadow area.
Both the Settlement and the Meadow have a convenience store/gift shop where you can pick up some grocery/camping/personal care items. The prices are a bit higher than convenience stores outside The World, but not horribly so. It sure beats getting into your car and driving miles for a gallon of milk, especially with the gas prices what they are! The stores also have souvenirs, some of which are repeats of what you will see in all the parks and Downtown Disney, and some of which are exclusive to Fort Wilderness. Check out the Disney Crocs!
The swimming pools are at the Meadow area. They are large, well-lit, and heated. There are lifeguards and a snack bar. I understand they have recently had some renovations to add more Disney-themed details, but I haven't seen this yet. There is also a nice playground, tennis courts, a volleyball court, and a canal that you can fish in (catch and release only). The bike and golf cart rental area used to also be here, but I understand it's been moved to the main check-in area. Also in the Meadow is the campfire program area. They show movies (Disne

A Disney experience - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
Site was not ready when promised. My site was tight with camper and truck. Transportation was good by bus, great by boat. Buffet restaurant was nice. Store was over-priced, small variety. Site fees are high for what they have, but a "good" value for Disney World. It was nice to have home away from home when we needed it. Pet friendly. When I go back, I will most likely stay here. If they tell you check-in is at 1:00. Count on 3:00. Check out the 24 hour pool, campfire, and fireworks.

Really Nice Cabins - from TripAdvisor.com
|
We stayed at the Fort Wilderness Resort Cabins for 8 nights. These are really comfortable and roomy cabins. Loved the rustic feel, but still had a lot of comforts of home, as well as cleaning service. It was really nice to have a kitchen where we could fix breakfast, coffee and hot cocoa before heading out to the parks for the day.
It is also nice to rent a golf cart to get around the property. They are a little pricey at $52 a day, so we only kept ours for 5 and used the bus service the other 3 days.
Had to wait about 30 minutes or so to check-in, the staff was nice, but there were only 3 people checking in on a Friday evening.

Failure to launch - from TripAdvisor.com
|
This was our first trip to the Fort Wilderness and most likely our last. Upon arrival we found out that our reservations were for next year. The website is not user friendly so we called and spoke with a person who seemed confused and he booked us for next year. They did find us another site. The site was flat and spacious and our site was surrounded by trees. The bathhouses were excellent and always clean. Golf cart drivers did not obey the one way signs. Buses were plentiful. Information is scarce as where to go and what to do. All prices inside the park were overpriced including the buffets. $4.50 for a bag of marshmallows is price gouging but at Disney they can do whatever. We watched the fireworks every night from the beach. It was an experience to remember. I wish the food was better and more affordable. One waiter was fabulous but some of the staff was inconsiderate and rude. Our check in agent was wonderful.

Always a Pleasure! - from TripAdvisor.com
|
My husband and I have stayed at Fort Wilderness several times, and our last was just as great as always!
One thing to keep in mind when booking your stay at the Disney World campground is that it is not your "typical" camping experience. For those that are used to the peace and quiet of a state park, and want to be away from the bustle of other people getting in to their site after a late night at the parks, this location is not for you.
The space provided is more than adequate if you pay attention to the size you need. In the past we had been on the "regular" sites, which are sized for single tents, or small pop-up campers without all the hookups. This time, however, we got placed in one of the upgraded sites, where some of the larger RVs stayed. Frankly, I preferred this! It meant that the "comfort stations" (read: bathrooms) were used much less than in the tent loops, which helps when it comes time to shower.
I read in other reviews that this resort isn't worth much unless you rent a bike or a golf cart. My husband and I found this to be completely untrue! There are busses that come by each and every loop on a regular schedule, and you can get from one end of the resort to the other in a fair amount of time. (For those complaining about how long it takes to get from one place to another you're on vacation! Take some time to relax, you're visiting the happiest place on Earth, and the only reason it won't be such is if you make it so!) We also enjoyed walking some of the distances. So long as you can be aware of your surroundings enough to dodge the occasional golf cart (which sticks to the streets and not the sidewalks) you will be fine.
One thing I always recommend is the breakfast buffet at the Trail's End restaurant. It's $12.95, and includes all of your drinks (coffee, sodas, orange juice) and all food items. They have a great spread, everything from fresh fruits to eggs and bacon and sausage, to muffins and biscuits and cereal. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the restaurant itself is pretty cute. The breakfast is a great way to start off a busy day in the parks, and we did exactly that with our friends before heading off to a fun-filled day.
On a different note, I want to say how wonderfully helpful the staff at this resort were. After my husband and I went to sleep after our full day in the parks, I woke up a few hours later with food poisoning. (Hot dogs at Kacey's... never can be too careful!) This seems to happen whenever I eat out someplace I am not familiar with, unfortunately. It was rough on my body having to walk to the comfort station every time I felt nauseous, and pretty soon I felt that medical attention might be necessary. My husband brought me in the car up to the front desk, where the manager contacted paramedics and stayed by my side to be sure that everything was alright. In addition he recommended several urgent care facilities we could go to, as a trip to the emergency room would have been long and expensive. Thankfully the paramedics checked the important things, found nothing to be terribly wrong and such a visit wasn't necessary. The manager gave me his card, and was very attentive and helpful to be sure I was alright. I really appreciated that. So, extra kudos to the staff at the front desk.
Despite these troubles, we still thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the campground, and will definitely be returning. I can't wait for my sister comes to visit, we'll be making the trek down again!

Disappointed overall - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
My husband and I made reservations at the Disney Fort Wilderness campground on Nov 21, 2008. A friend and her two sons joined us. As we pulled into our assigned campsite, our first small it was. All the sites in our loop were extremely cramped with little tree coverage. We could barely fit two 9 ft tents on the pad and still have room to sit and eat. The worst part was our campsite being located on a main road! The night was miserable - diesel engine trucks and Disney transportation buses drove by by constantly up thru midnight. In addition, there were asphalt crew trucks driving by and a lawn blower @ 9:00 am. Then, security informed us we could only have 1 car, so my friend had to park her car in a parking lot! We couldn't see how one extra car would hurt. You look all around and see 35 foot motorhomes with SUVs and golf carts. If they are worried about space, I don't see how 2 small trucks would compare to what we saw. As we laid in our tents, flashes of lights and sounds from cars driving by and late night check-in's were extremely annoying. It was like camping by an interstate! My advice is if you want a quiet, primitive, tent-camping experience with a campfire - don't stay here! Everything is overpriced, but that's nothing new with Disney. The only good thing were the bathrooms, extremely clean. This was our first and last experience with Fort Wilderness. We will never camp here again!

Like Spending the Evening at a Truck-Stop - from TripAdvisor.com
|
This place is not for campers who want to enjoy the wilderness and relax in the peace and quiet.
Fort Wilderness should be called "Fort Orlando" it was like spending the night at a truck stop. Big motorized, Diesel-powered RVs moving in and out till the middle of the night. Things did not settle down till well past 2:00am.
Tent campers are interspersed with RV campers. There should be a designated area for primitive camping. This is hands down, the noisiest camp spot I have ever stayed at I'm faithfully returning to the state parks. If you want the full Disney, commercial experience, then I suppose this is for you, but I was not impressed I will never return to camp here.
We shared a camp spot with another family and set up two tents. I will say the camping area is clean and the ground was good for tent camping. The 'comfort' facilities are clean and nice, but that is as far as I can go.
Most campers had huge motorized RVs; they were allowed to also have at their site, one more vehicle, a golf cart, assorted camping equipment, (the usual) etc as well as all kinds of inflatable large, lit-up holiday lawn ornaments all over the place, I felt like I was in a cheap trailer-park heaven.
In contrast, we had a modest campsite with two tents, two trucks, and only the essentials. Later in the evening, we had to move one of our vehicles. We had two trucks, which fit nicely into the camping driveway and were parked well away from the main driving area - a guard came by around 8:30 pm and told us to move one of our vehicles to the entryway parking lot - no more than one vehicle is allowed (but what about the other campers with all kinds of crap at their sites???). Then we were told to extinguish our campfire - even the one we had in our grill. Campfires are not allowed a total bummer. Even the fire we had in our on-site grill was ordered to go out when the flames got a little too high. However, nothing was mentioned to our neighbors across the way who had a campfire outside their RV which was also left unattended for long periods...(grumble)
In true Disney fashion everything was expensive, a basic disposable camera was $17.00. You can't fish unless you rent a pole - and its only catch and release. Bike rentals are $18.00 p/day, and if you get there mid-day your rental is not pro-rated. You cannot keep a rental bike at your site overnight, and the bikes are not very good quality.
By 8:30 am, the next morning, grounds keepers were busy using blowers near some of the RVs to clean up the sites. Traffic starts up again in the morning with the sound of big Diesel engines regularly moving in and out of the place.
Golf carts abound and while walking along some of the pathways, we frequently had to dodge the carts.
The overall experience was like staying in a mini-city. I guess if you want to pretend your camping, you may like this place, however, I do not recommend Disney Fort Wilderness if you just want to go and enjoy nature its all contrived here.
Instead, go to a nice state park its a lot cheaper, and much more quiet. They still have hiking/biking trails, you can fish, eat what you catch or just release it , bring your own bike, canoe, and have a lovely campfire. And usually they have fair to excellent shower/toilet facilities as well.

Deluxe Tent Camping - from TripAdvisor.com
|
This was our first Family Tent Camping trip ever and we were fortunate enough to go with two other families that had camping experience. Overall this was a WONDERFUL family trip and we learned a lot for next time. In fact we are already planning our next trip back to Fort Wilderness in the spring.
RESORT REVIEW: Fort Wilderness is 100% Disney, meaning that it is very clean, well laid out, the staff is super nice, and I'm not sure where they put all the bugs.
Check-in is relatively simple. You have two options here; (1) is to use the drive-up check-in window. (2) is to go inside the main building. Either is fine and we used both since we had three separate campsites. The other consideration is if the car line is too long, you might have better luck inside. You can also setup your Golf Cart during check-in to save some time.
The Tent Campsites are all very similar. Small paved driveway to park your vehicle and a large sandy pad with a picnic table, water and electricity. They also seem to be setting up cable at each site, but ours was not ready. The sites are relatively close together, but not too close. The Comfort Station (aka Bathroom) was located near the front of our loop and short walk from all the campsites. Super clean, hot showers, and serviced regularly. For any other novices, I highly recommend doing a test run to setup your tent, air matresses, sleeping bags, etc, prior to your actual trip. This will reduce the stress and help you to start your trip on a good note.
Many of the activities are centrally located (Movie, pools, etc). The kids really enjoyed the movie each night as well as the smores. While Disney does sell all the smores supplies, I highly recommend bringing your own as prices seem to have gone up.
The onsite general store seemed to have reasonable prices considering it is on disney property. They have a decent selection of the basic items and will likely have you covered in any emergency situations (eg. diapers).
Transportation in and around the campground and Disney definitely takes longer because everything is so spread out. Renting an EXPENSIVE golf cart (my only complaint) is helpful to get your around Fort Wilderness, but everything else requires a bus or boat. Make sure to plan extra travel time if you're scheduled to be somewhere else on Disney property.
OTHER TIPS: - Get there early with plenty of daylight to setup your campsite. - Since it is Car Camping, bring anything you might need/use. - Make sure to bring any necessary tools, like a good hammer to drive in your tent stakes. - Bring Christmas lights to put on your tent to make it more festive. - Use a checklist, GORP has a good one here, http://gorp.away.com/gorp/gear/practical-advice/car-camping-packing-list.html

Wonderful Visit - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
Our stay was definately a relaxing and enjoyable stay. All of our expectations were met. We took the advice of other reviews and rented a golf cart, very wise choice since our children are 2 and 4. It is true that it is not a necessity if you are trying to save a few dollars, but it is very handy and there isn't a lot of parking for vehicles and just easier to get around with, the kids loved it and it was worth every penny. We enjoyed the Hoop-de-Doo Revue which will probably be one of our children's fondest memories in years to come, they haven't stopped taking about it yet. We also attended Mickey's Backyard BBQ, which I thought would have been a favorite by a landslide, but they enjoyed the Hoop-de-Doo Revue show more. It is true that reservations in advance is necessary as it seems to be continually busy and booked. We found it helpful to even make reservations for breakfast the next day on the night before so we didn't have much waiting to do with the children. The breakfast is delicious and included in the Dining Plan. The only one disappointment was the Meadow Pool area snack window was closed for the season. We would have liked to be able to use this option during the afternoon for lunch rather than making reservations for the sit down lunch at the Tavern. We did purchase our own kitchen goodies for quick lunches, but we made a Walmart run which was a good distance, as to avoid the steeper prices in the campground Meadow Trading Post convenience store. They are rather small and carry just the essentials. We were there for Halloween which turned out to be a lot of fun & very festive, they had a ball trick-or-treating, and there were also plenty of activities for the children to attend all week long, for all ages. Getting back and forth to the Magic Kingdom couldn't have been easier. We parked the golf cart in the back of the campground and took the little boat over numerous times. The boat held quite a few people so we didn't have to ever wait for the next one, and it was so easy to maneuver the strollers on board. And never had to wait more than a few minutes for the next one to arrive. The one thing that made me unsure of staying here from the previous reviews were the ones of the pools. Since we have two little ones this was a rather important feature to us since they love to swim, but I was greatly pleased when we arrived, they are not fancy with big slides and water fountains, but they are immaculately clean and large and beautiful with staffed lifeguards and very accommodating hours. We rented a cabin which was very, very clean, and maintained each day by the housekeeper, such a nice feature...the previous reviews of the comfortable murphy pull out bed are right on target, it truly is more comfortable than the full size bed in the bedroom believe it or not. This is where we will stay for sure on our next visit, even after considering staying at a luxury hotel, it is just so much nicer to have a little place to call home after a busy day rather than a one room hotel room. We hope you enjoy your visit as much as we did!

Best destination campground. - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
Four generations of my family have camped at Fort Wilderness since it opened in 1971. Each time we go we decide to make another reservation as soon as we get home. Halloween at Fort Wilderness is like a fantastic block party with everyone decorating their site, their rv, golf carts, bikes, children, adults and pets. There are special craft and sports activities for the kids during the day, and Disney movies at the campfire circle each evening. Other holidays have special activities too. Once you are there it is unnecessary to use your car. The Disney bus system will transport you anywhere from the theme parks, to the hotels and Disney Marketplace. It is a great place for children of all ages at any time of the year.

Magical! - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
We have visited Disney for several years during Dec for MVMC and this was the first time we stayed at Fort Wilderness, it was magical! My only complaint is the cost of the golf cart rentals, they were the same as the lot prices each day! Thank God we had one golf cart that we brought, but we had to rent another one and that was very costly. Other than that, My whole family loved it! It was great for the dogs and we can't wait to go this coming Dec to see the new doggie park!

Details Regarding Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground - from TripAdvisor.com
|
Fort Wilderness normally gets pretty good reviews. I simply don't understand why. Maybe it's because avid campers are comparing it to other campgrounds. Of course, it's going to be a tad better than your mom and pop campgrounds...it's Disney World for pete's sake! However, for the thousands of dollars you spend, it should by all means have much better amenities and service!
(1) Basically, you check in and you are handed an inch thick stack of paper and sent on your merry way to figure everything out...good luck! Trying to navigate your way around Walt Disney World from this resort is like trying to figure out where you are going in a very large city via buses and the subway with your eyes closed.
(2)Remember if you have small children, you will be doing a lot of traveling on a bus or boat. If you are going to Magic Kingdom, you will spend 10 minutes getting to the marina (and that's if you invest in a golf cart at about $55 a day), 15 minutes waiting for a boat and then you will be sitting on the boat for about 10 minutes...this ends up being over an hour of waiting and travel just to get to the park and back. All other parks are much further away...and you can get there only by bus! The worst experience we had was when our bus driver missed our stop and we ended up being on the bus with two tired children for an hour and ten minutes just to get to Downtown Disney. The resort is near absolutely nothing!
(3)If you stay here, think twice about investing in the dining plan because there are no quick service meals even though it says there are! Also, most of the restaurants you will be interested in throughout the parks won't be on the dining plan. We attempted to get some help from the front desk regarding dining a couple of times and they were of absolutely no help whatsoever...basically, the front desk said they had no control over the "dining plan" and that we would have to speak with the individual food service places; the food service places would say they have no control over the "dining plan" and that we could talk to the front desk with any questions...absolutely ridiculous! All we wanted was for someone to tell us what places really participated in the plan as all brochures had conflicting information. Conveniently for them, there are no individual food service provider telephone numbers! I think everyone employed by Walt Disney World is coached to repeat the phrases "Have a Magical Day" and "I'm so sorry, I wish there was something I could do"...I heard both of these a thousand times...but nobody could seem to solve a problem.
(4)We chose this resort because it had a small beach but there was no swimming at the beach. The swimming pools were supposed to be heated to 82 degrees...there was no way the swimming pools were heated. They were also very basic...no slides, fountains, etc.
(5)We stayed in a cabin...it was okay. It had your basic stuff but nothing that stands out as a "magical experience". The cabin was quite dark which became quite bothersome after a couple of days. The beds were fine but they are full-size...a bit small. The water-pressure was fine. The kitchen was stocked with all of the basic necessities. The location of our cabin was fine but we noticed many of the loops were surrounded by swamp water which was really yucky! The daily cleaning service varied daily depending on who cleaned it...sometimes it was very good with extra touches (one washed our dishes for us) and sometimes the beds weren't made well.
(6) If you stay at a resort, one of the "perks" is the Extra Magic hours...just for you). We found this to be useless...there is not a whole lot you can do at Animal Kingdom during extra magic hours in the dark! Keep in mind that a lot of the activities at each of the parks are not open during extra magic hours and of course, these activities are why you would want to go early or late in the first place!
(7)I highly recommend staying elsewhere (Daytona Beach, etc) and visiting whichever park you might be interested in that day. Magic Kingdom is pretty nice for younger children, Downtown Disney is good for those who like a nightlife...but was not for us, Hollywood Studios is pretty useless unless you are really into movies, Epcot is pretty much boring and you would have a much better time visiting animals at your local zoo than at Animal Kingdom.

Good for groups - from TripAdvisor.com
|
Took my family (6 total) for a late Christmas present - January stay. We loved the cabin. All the kids (4) stayed in the bedroom and my husband and I took the pull out of the wall bed. Let me just say that the wall bed was awesome. I was thinking that it would be painful to sleep on but, no It was just as good as a regular bed.
Yes, the bus riding became a nuisance, but, felt that there was no other way that they could have it set up, so it was good for the circumstances. Everyone was nice and housekeeping was good to us. We loved the fact that we had a kitchen so we could cut meal costs by having breakfast at the cabin before wandering off to the parks. I highly recommend the cabins for those who are looking for a deal and have more than the standard 4 to a family.
Disney has always been good to us and we will continue to stay on site.

Best Campground - from TripAdvisor.com

We stay at Fort Wilderness campground on a regular basis with our travel trailer. As you would expect from Disney, the campground is very clean and I was amazed that it was so quiet. We have seen a lot of wildlife very close to our campsite including deer and wild turkeys. They offer bus transportation through the campground or you can rent Golf Carts or bicycles. There is a lot to do for no extra cost, or you can pay extra for horseback riding, boating, fishing trips. There are two stores, the one in the middle of the park offers a lot more groceries then the one by the lake. This is a really special campground and offers a lot. I can't imagine staying anywhere else.

|
We stayed in a cabin Oct. 4-11, 2008. There were things we liked and didn't liked (aren't there always) about Fort Wilderness, but overall we had a great time! Here's my best advice if you're planning a trip to this resort:
1. Rent a golf cart in advance. This resort is like staying at a large State Park. Yes, they are overpriced, but it's worth it and if you have kids it'll be one of their favorite parts of the trip. By the end of the week, if anyone said, "Let's Go," my 20 month old would jump up and down and excitedly say, "golf cart, golf cart!"
2. If you're on the dining plan, realize that this resort has no counter service or snack service. We had a rental car, so we went to Royale Orleans close by for counter service a couple times. At the end of our trip, we had several counter service credits and snack credits left over. This was the only negative about Fort Wilderness in our minds.
3. Request a cabin in loop 2100 or 2200. You'll be closer to the places you'll go to over and over again. Some of the other cabin areas looked a little swampy after all the rain.
4. Book Hoop De Doo Revue! This show put everyone in our group in a great mood.
5. Don't miss Mickey's Philarmagic while at Magic Kindgom. It's a 3-D theater that's just amazing! The 3-D is so real that you will be ducking and reaching out in front of you.
6. Don't miss the evening parade at Magic Kingdom! It's where you feel the Disney magic that everyone talks about!
HAVE FUN!

Quiet and clean! - from TripAdvisor.com
|
We stayed at the Wilderness Cabins Sept 23- 30th.They were clean and well equipped for a family of 4. We had decided to not rent a car and let the Disney transport system do its thing. The Magic Express from the airport to the hotel was great and we got to check in at 12;00 when we arrived. Bonus! Mind you...this was the slower part of the year. Those who are planning to "park" the time they have, don't worry about the non themed swimming pools. We did not go in once as we opted for Typhoon Lagoon one day...and that was all the time we had to get in the water.
A golf cart is a must unless you want to ride the bus all day. We justified the cost because we did not rent a car. (300.00 for the week) Pricey, but well worth it! fun too. We got the Disney Deluxe Dining plan. but we would not get the enhanced plan again (3 meals plus two snacks a day was way too much food! We were always full and it made it seem like were were planning around eating all the time! The snacks we arranged through GArden grocers to arrive at our cabin, went uneaten. Stick with the basic dining plan if you want a pre-paid eating plan!
The campfire set up is for real young kids. My 8 and 11 year old did not want to stay as the show was a bit too "young" for them although the kiddies around seemed to love it. Our boys really enjoyed the Hoop-Dee-Doo review...very corny and fun. The food is not great, but they liked the show so much...we went twice! Hint, if you want to improve your chances of getting picked to participate, go to the later show(9:30) it is less crowded at this time of year. The boat to the Mgic Kingdom is great! Nice to get on a resort boat at the end of park hours instead of lining up for the big boat. We did not use the kitchen because we had the dining plan, but it would have been great if our plan was to cook. There are no counter meals or snacks available at this resort if you have the dining plan. The Trail's end was good for breakfast, offering a buffet of various breakfast items. the Mickey waffles were a hit with one son, and the breakfast Pizza was a hit with older son. ( Ok..I was a fan of the waffles too!) I would be alittle concerned about the bus transport system inside the resort / It is a huge property and I would imagine that at the busy times. you would be waiting in lineups often which wastes precious Disney Time! All in all...a good trip, even though we are more than not, Hotel people. We have stayed at a number of Disney resorts through the years, and this is a good option for families who want an extra bedroom and a laid back experience. By the way..there were so few waits at the Disney rides ( 20 min max, most 10 min) at this time of year. The longest wait was for the new Toy Story ride in Hollywood Studios. ( 40 min) . MK was open till midnight and we saw got on all rides with no wait during the first 9:00 parade. Then we watched the fireworks and watched the 11:00 parade.

We stayed in our travel trailer and had a great time. The campground is currently undergoing improvements. We loved the campfire with Chip & Dale and enjoyed sitting on the beach every night watching the fireworks and the electric parade. Awesome campground!

Wet, but still fun - from TripAdvisor.com
|

This past August we visited Disney and stayed in the cabins at the campground. This was our third time staying in the cabins and had a great time. As always the cabins are neat and clean and the buses to the different resorts are always on time. Although it rained for most of our trip, we probably got on more of our favorite rides due to fewer people. All in all a great trip.

Happiest Cabins on Earth! - from TripAdvisor.com
|
Our stay in the cabin was fantastic! The cabin was really neat, lots of room, great atmosphere - we just loved it. For all the reviewers that are complaining about a little dust... get real people, it's a cabin for goodness sake. It's called roughing it... ever heard of it?
For all of you out there that are looking for a great way to experience the outdoors with your family while staying at Disney, this is a really great option. Spend you time enjoying the campfire sing-a-long, the pool, the tri-circle-d farm, and all the other family friendly activities that are there to help you enjoy the outdoors... don't spend you time giving the cabin a "white glove test" for dust.

Disney Magical all the way. Great sites. Extra nice (clean) bath facilities. Kids love the nightly campfire and move, and of course the visit from Chip and Dale. Water Pageant like nowhere else. Sparkling clean pool with pleasant life guards. Check in/out staff very friendly. Convenient transportation within campground and all over Disney property. We've seen higher prices at lesser campgrounds! Definitely recommend a stay at Fort Wilderness!

Cabin nice, overall experience just OK... - from TripAdvisor.com
|
Some friends and I rented out a cabin at Fort Wilderness because it was the cheapest way for 5 people to stay in one room, and we really liked the idea of having a full kitchen. Needless to say, for the price, the cabin itself, and the cleanliness, was impressive. The only complaint I had about the accommodations was that the little parking area in front of our cabin could have been a bit bigger we had a little Volkswagen and an average-sized SUV and could barely fit both of them in the parking area...it was a tight squeeze to say the least.
The things about Fort Wilderness that made my stay just so-so were the transportation issues and the pool. I've stayed at many different Disney resorts, including ones on the monorail line and ones that just run buses, and have never really had major complaints about the transportation, but Fort Wilderness is a bit ridiculous. For instance, from our cabin we had to take one bus to a different bus stop, take another bus to yet another bus stop, walk about 500 yards, and then take a very slow boat, all to get to Magic Kingdom. I understand Fort Wilderness is large, but you would think that they would at least have a bus that went directly from the main bus stop to the Magic Kingdom, which apparently is not the case.
The pool was just gross. It was large but was just a rectangular pool, no slides or anything, and there was a film on the top of the water that was obviously a mixture of suntan oil and sunscreen and who knows what else. It just didn't look like it had been cleaned recently. Also, there were a lot of unsupervised children running around, despite the fact that it was late at night when we finally did go to the pool.
Overall, if you're going to Disney during an off-season, I think Fort Wilderness is an okay place to stay if you have no other option, but I certainly would not suggest going during a busy season. You waste too much time trying to get to the parks and the busy seasons tend to be warmer anyway (except for Thanksgiving/Christmas) so you would of course want to swim, and I don't suggest the gross pool here.

Unmagical Experience. Do not recommend cabins! - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
Check in was slow. Entire cabin floor dirty & entire cabin very dusty. Dust pan in closet but no broom? There is a vacuum cleaner but the housekeeper didn't use it. I guess I was suppose to vacuum on vacation? Do not provide paper towels for the full size kitchen. Called to request paper towels & each time sd they would bring them but 3rd call sd they don't provide paper towels. Saw housekeeping take paper towels into next door cabin??? Need a golf cart to get around but sold out first 2 days of our stay b/c we did not know we had to have one to get around. 15 min parking for your vehicle had to park in grass for an hour to get our golf cart on our 3rd day. Wouldn't give us a golf cart @ 11:30am with no line when there was a whole field filled with golf carts. Why couldn't a cast member go get one & charge it for us to use? That would have made my experience much better & it is called excellent customer service. Came back at gtd 1pm stood in line for 45 min to get our cart. Didn't get to do anything until 2:30pm on our third day. wasted 1/2 the day with a 4yr old & 6yr old. Coffee pot broken at check in so we left on counter for housekeeping to see & replace instead they washed it in the dishwasher. Called for a new one & they sent maintenance with a screwdriver. 1 day & 1 hour later finally rec'd a new coffee pot! This was our first time staying at a WDW resort & we will never stay again. The experience was not what we expected. Felt like they took our $ in advance & then it was all up to ourselves to have a magical time. Manager & crew members just said Sorry! Well sorry is not going to make me try to stay at another Walt Disney World Resort... We will be going back to Nick Hotel Family Suites at the main gate. No problems there the past 6yrs we have stayed. Thanks Disney for nothing extra. No extra magic staying on-site!

A good campground but not up to Disney standards - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
The check-in procedures are very Disney. Friendly and efficient. The campground is expansive and has all the amenities with the notable exception of free (or any) wireless internet. After staying at the Wilderness Lodge my wife and I had decided to give the campground a try. The pool is an average pool nothing like the hotels. I had hoped for the internet thing but it didn't pan out. Other than the internet thing it was well taken care of. Clean showers and plenty of activities for everyone!

Campin' -Disney style (tent) - from TripAdvisor.com
|
I'm not much of a nature girl so when my family unanimously voted to go camping I figured Disney would be a safe bet. And I was right! Most of the reviews on here are from people who stayed in a cabin. We stayed 2 nights in a tent. We had "neighbors" on both sides who were helpful and nice. Our kids even made friends with everyone. =) We stayed in the 2000 loop. It wasn't the one I had hoped for but we checked in late so the 1400 loop was already full. The bathrooms were kept very clean. Everyone was patient and kind and very quick in the showers. I did not take pictures of the bathrooms for obvious reasons but there were never any problems in there anyway. No mildew or mold and I purposely looked for it with this review in mind. Do not plan on sleeping in if you are staying on one of the campsites. Our kids woke us up around 6:30-7 am each morning which was not a problem for us. Our surrounding neighbors also woke up and even played music. Again it was not a problem for us but some people may mind. Disney must spray for bugs because we didn't really need our 3 bottles of Off that we brought with us. My biggest complaint is the bus situation. We had a problem with getting back to our loop when the bus we were on changed from "Purple" to "Yellow" while we were on it and we told we would have to get off and catch another bus. The next "purple" bus we saw told us as we got on it was no longer purple and that he had just changed to "yellow". At that time I was quite annoyed because I was with my 3 kids who were still in wet bathing suits. Since we were dropped off at the front desk area, we walked there and were given a ride back to our site. I was told by other people in our loop that the "Purple" bus passed them several times without picking them up. That was our biggest problem and everything else was fun, perfect, and clean! =) TIP: if you plan on watching the water pageant and fireworks after the campfire songs with Chip and Dale do not stay to watch the movie. Go immediately after the show skip the movie. Also, the campfire where you have to make smores is small and there are usually a lot of people. Don't expect to make your entire bag on marshmallows. Your kids will enjoy snacking on them uncooked anyway. ;-)

Wonderful Experience - OK Cabin/room - from TripAdvisor.com
|
July 22, 2008. Just got back from a two night stay. My DH, and I and two of our grandchildren stayed in cabin 2231. We visit Disney frequently and have stayed in several of their resorts. Some parts of this resort were fabulous - (nothing was bad) - but some parts just OK.
Cabins are rustic in a charming way and you can't go wrong with a full size refrigerator and kitchen. Also a full size coffee maker with extra packets of coffee under the cabinet. We had tons of towels in the bathroom and the peaked (A-frame style) ceilings make the rooms feel bigger. There are some nice shelves in the bathroom for your toiletries. Also nice was having a TV in the bedroom and the living area (although neither TV flat screen and both on the small size ). The Murphy bed in the living room was comfy and easy to pull out and put away (the 8 year old had no problem). The air conditioning was perfect and kept the cabin very cool, even in the 90 degree weather. Beds were not plush but comfy enough.
However, the cabins are dark with minimal lighting and the rooms are small. The bedroom has one full size bed pushed up against the wall and a set of twin beds pushed up against the other wall - with just enough space between them. The Murphy-bed is another full size bed. (we are used to our King-size bed) There is almost no drawer space and very little closet space. I like to put clothes away if I'm staying a few days, and it was a good thing this was only a short stay or I would have had to live out of the suitcase. The blow dryer is in the bedroom in front of a mirror- but in a kind of cramped dark space.
If you just wanted the kitchen and separate bedroom and did not come for the camping - then there are other Disney resorts that I think are much nicer.
Resort. The grounds are gorgeous and peaceful - which can be a wonderful relief after the busy times in the theme parks. It does feel like camping (even for those of us who wouldn't be caught dead in a tent!) Great paths for running, biking, rollerblading, walking, with almost no traffic, including a 3.8 mile exercise loop from the campground to the Wilderness lodge. The swimming pools are nice- if utilitarian, and never seemed too crowded during our stay.
Groceries/Dining - the "Trading Posts" at the resort have a fairly good selection of the small size versions of supplies but they are very pricey. We brought our own food, but I checked prices just for fun. Whoa! A six pack of beer was $12.82 at the Trading Post. If you have a car, there are several grocery stores nearby, including a Super Wal-Mart about 3.5 miles from Downtown Disney. There is only one restaurant on the grounds - the Trails Inn Buffet. We did not eat there this time - but last year it was fine if not fancy.
Getting around. A golf cart does make it much nicer and is probably worth the extra $50 per day. They aren't necessary - because the buses do run everywhere, but with the cart you don't have to wait for a bus which can take up to 15 minutes each time, they can be fun to drive around, and you get to feel like one of the "campers." Golf carts are everywhere! Walking is unrealistic because the area is bigger than you think. We had a really long wait to get our golf cart - but supposedly that isn't the norm. The cart was reserved but they are not available until 1 p.m., so I went to the bike barn at 1:45 thinking to avoid the initial rush. Wrong! Waited in line until finally getting my cart at 3 p.m. Next time, I'd go about 12:30 and hope to beat the rush.
FYI - the Boat to Magic Kingdom is not climate controlled (not air conditioned). We've taken the boat before, and it can be fun when the temperature is nicer - but if we stay at this resort again in the summer, I'll just drive to the parks in our own car. It would be faster and more comfy.
Experience. Two things not to miss. The Campfire sing-along and going to the beach at night. The campfire was fun. It starts at 7:30 for the fire starting and then singing at 8. The fire-starting is not ceremonial - so you can easily wait until closer to 8 p.m. to arrive. The fire is still going and there will be plenty of time to roast the marsh mellows before the movie starts. The kids enjoyed the sing-along and Chip and Dale make the rounds while you are singing.
At 9:45 p.m. the lighted boat parade is visible from the beach and lots of campers drive their golf carts down to the Marina parking spots and go out on the beach lounge chairs or on blankets. Then at 10 p.m. the nightly fireworks from the Magic Kingdom are visible. We took flashlights - (wish I'd remembered glow sticks) and the kids had a great time.
One final hint. Because I got a "deal" on one of the nights - Disney made me make two reservations. One reservation for one night at one rate, and one for the other night at the other rate. I didn't care until the check-in representa

Camping Disney style! - from TripAdvisor.com
|
I never expected to go to Disney and sleep in a tent. I am usually the resort type person. My kids and I spent two nights in a tent and had so much fun.
There is so much to do at the resort that we never ventured off the campgrounds those days. My girls, ages 17 & 13, went swimming, played basketball, took a hike and rented a canoe. My son, who is 8, and I visited the petting zoo and stopped in the arcade for a little bit. We even got the girls to try fishing, which was hilarious when they found out the bait was live worms. Even I got the courage to bait a few hooks but we never caught a fish. One night we took the 9 PM carriage ride through the resort and watched the fireworks from Magic Kingdom from the beach directly across from the park. It was nice. My son wants to take that ride again.
This is a very nice campground and the price is great for a Disney property. We are planning on going back next week for a few nights just to camp and watch fireworks. It makes a great getaway for the family.

Great time here! - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
I stayed at the Fort Wilderness in one of the cabins with a group of my friends. It was four 20 somethings all staying together for a long weekend. We didn't see the need to spend the extra money on a golf cart because everything was easy to walk to, though I would understand the need for one in the summer months when it gets too hot to even walk off the porch. The buses ran efficiently and we never waited more than a few minutes for them. Our cabin was very clean and the staff were very helpful. Check in took no time at all and we even had a clerk that was in training and everything still went smoothly! The only problem we ran into was that the hair dryer stopped working but less than a half hour after we called and told them about it, they were there to fix it and even brought us a back up in case the other gave out again (which it didn't.) The price is a bit much but worth it for the privacy and space. You really feel like you're on you own. Overall a fantastic place to stay and would go back anytime!

Not Disney Like - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
Our cabin was very dirty...I could write letters in the dust. The cabins and resort are not updated. Plugs did not work in the bathroom. The door to the bathroom had to be forced open...they did fix that while we were there. Takes 2 times as long to get to the parks from this resort as the other resorts. You have to take a bus to get to a boat or another bus to get to other resorts. We gave up too long of a wait to get there and drove the rest of the time. The only place to eat at this resort was not good and I paid $80.00 for 2 adults and 2 kids. Not what you expect out of Disney. We will never go back to any Disney resort they are too overpriced. We have stayed off site before and it was nicer and a 3rd of the cost. Disney did send a survey to fill out online and I called the front desk to make known all of the problems and all they said was I'm sorry at front desk and no response from survey. Don't waste your money on going to this resort. Still had fun at the parks, we just won't go back to the resorts ever again.

What a great time! - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
Great camping accommodations, pet friendly in the campsite w/kennels available for the day & night if needed. The Chip & Dale campfire show was great. The floating light show from the beach was fun. Campfire food prices were high but you can bring your own & roast marshmellows. General store prices were high as well. The comfort stations were fabulous and our 5th wheel fit just fine in the spot we were in (the 500 loop) the loop is within walking distance to everything. You don't need a cart to get around but I do recommend bringing bikes. They also have a dog park there. Transportation by boat between the Magic Kingdom & campsite is excellent. Boat to the monorail to Epcot was great to, no need to drive any where.

Great Stay - from TripAdvisor.com
|
Fort Wilderness is a wonderful place. Myself, my husband, son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter (nearly four years) stayed for one week at the Wilderness Resort.
Our accommodation was comfortable and clean, the pull down bed was a little small but we managed.
The outside space was great. The pools were never too busy, the trading posts managed to provide essentials and it was only a short drive to the local supermarket if you need more supplies.
The buses were great - air conditioned, ran frequently and made our stay more relaxing as there was less driving involved.
The jewel in the crown for us was the boat over to the Magic Kingdom a great way to travel and so convenient. Our granddaughter was bowled over by it all and we will certainly come again.
The other facility worth a mention was the great laundry. It was clean, equipment easy to use and cheap.

We reserved for 2 nights in Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground and I found good and bad things:
Good:
Wonderful place, you are in direct contact with nature. You can see deers at night and rabbits during the day. You can listen to the birds songs everywhere. The cabin was very cozy, clean and in some way comfortable.
Staff very helpful and friendly.
It is a very quiet place and very safe.
The Meadows Trading Post is like a little market, where you can find a lot of things for your cabin, (food, charcoal, gas tans refills, souvenirs, etc)
For a family of 6, it is the perfect place to stay everybody together expending less money.
Nice decoration of the cabins,
Bad:
The Check-In at 3:05 p.m was extremely slow. We waited almost 1 hour for check-in. As this happened the first day I opened a Credit Card guarantee for the Express Check Out.
You really need a Golf Cart to move inside the Resort. There is not parking in any place (Only in the Front Desk Area). We could not even go to the Pioneers Hall, where is the best Restaurant. The don't have enough golf carts and when you go to rent them they say that you must have a Reservation in advance, but nobody told us that the amount of golf cart would be limited.
There is not parking in almost any place.
You waste a lot of time waiting for the buses to move from one place to the other one and are a little complicated to figured out the routes.
No snack bars, restaurant or Cafeterias around the swimming pool... Not even towels for the swimming pool.
Very inconvenient the bus transportation system to the parks. You can spend hours in that process. Nothing to do with Universal Studios.

Hopefully it was our cabin not yours - from TripAdvisor.com
|
|
The Fort Wilderness resort is a great moderately priced (for Disney of coarse) place to stay on Disney property. Our cabin, however, was pretty bad. There was a terrible odor, which never did really go away. The floors had obviously not been mopped. The housekeeping and maintenance staff kept trying to clean our room while our children were napping. Otherwise, the transportation to and from the parks is wonderful and convenient. The Golf Cart rental, is a must! The fireworks must be seen from the beach! If you are bringing your own camper or tent and are doing the "camping thing" - Go for it! Although, be prepared to not have a campfire... recent droughts have made firepits a thing of the past. This being the case, you are going to need a great deal of charcoal as they prohibit the use of twigs, leaves, etc. in their grills. Pool is very much so-so. My advice would be to locate something off property for a much lesser price and perhaps better amenities.

Great for families! - from TripAdvisor.com

My husband and I took our two year old son to Fort Wilderness at Disney for four nights in May 2008. The cabins exceeded our expectations with plenty of room and all of the accommodations of home. We were able to save money by bringing food and drinks on our vacation because of the full kitchen, and BBQ grill, that are provided. I would definitely recommend renting a golf cart. The resort is huge and it is well worth the money to be able to get around easily. My son also loved riding around in the cart! We loved the Chip and Dale campfire, that is a must-see. The only downside to our stay was the Magic Kingdom fireworks at 10:00 every night. They were very, very loud and woke my son up a couple of nights. Overall, this was an exceptional vacation for us. We will plan on staying here next time for sure.

Great fun! - from TripAdvisor.com
|
It was my first time camping and what better place to go than Fort Wilderness Resort! It was pouring with rain when we got there yet we battled to put our tent up. Wonderful paved drive to our spot, sandy gravel area to pitch the tent. Nonetheless, the rain passed and we setup a little BBQ and cooked our dinner. We think we were the only tent there, we were surrounded by fancy motor homes.
The movie and marshmallows was a blast - it was a great setting and fun to see the children get so much enjoyment out of it. Disney must spray for bugs as apart from a few tiny frogs, there were no bugs. As someone who gets bitten a bunch I can confirm I didn't not get a single bite!
Very clean showers which were empty most of the time and well lit areas without being disturbing to the setting. We woke up a bit in the night due to more rain but had a great sleep overall. Great to wake up to birds tweeting!
My husband has converted me to liking camping. We plan on going back in December and will rent a buggy so we can tour everyone's decorated RVs. Can't wait!
