We were lucky to book one night's stay at Cape Henlopen. Our stay was quiet and relaxing and fun.

The park is a beautiful way to see Delaware beaches. Bring your bicycles. The park is well connected with paved hiker/biker trails that lead to scenic look-outs over the sand dunes onto attractive bay and ocean beaches. There are multiple beach access points some of which are only accessible from the trail.

The trail offers insight into the role that the area played during WWII; several WWII-era bunkers and concrete observation towers are open and accessible. We spent the first two hours of our visit just exploring the park on our bikes.

After playing around in the park, we quickly set up camp in a shaded, clean site located in the middle of the campground.
Sites for tents are mixed with sites for campers. Out site was equipped with a fire ring and a water spigot (other sites have electricity hookups too). The camp offers a clean bath house with warm showers. There is an ice concession ($2.00/bag) at the entrance of the park.

The park is in Lewes, Delaware, and is only about two miles from the Lewes-Cape May ferry. On our next trip, if we are able to book a long weekend stay, we will be sure to incorporate a day trip over to Cape May with our bikes.

We really enjoyed our stay at Cape Henlopen State Park. The sites on the outer loop offered some privacy and all sites were wooded. The ground was soft and sandy. The bugs weren't too bad at the site but out on the trails, ouch we got bit up. Take the hike to the great sand dune, it's worth it, it doesn't look like it belongs in Delaware.

The bathrooms were close and clean, but there was always a wait at the end of the "beach day" and there wasn't a convenient space arrangement for changing in there. This was my most major complaint. But it wasn't enough to ruin it or anything.

The park itself is super convenient, you could do the bay beach or the beach beach, which had bathrooms/showers/big snack bar/ beach rentals. There is an area for surf fishing, which is where we liked to lay out on the beach even t hough we weren't doing as such. There was hiking, biking, family activities, a nature center, Frisbee golf, I don't know what else you could ask for.

Lewes is adorable and only 5 mins away, and Rehobeth is about 15, depending on traffic. The outlets are even closer, so the campground is a convenient base of operations.

We stayed there for 2 nights, and generally speaking It was not bad. The decisive factor for going there was the beach which is very nice.
The cons of the campground were the mosquitoes (as in any other campground) but above all were the flies that bite. I tried my Hot Shot flying insect killer, the sticky ribbon and mosquito repellent and the result was that neither work against the flies (did not take a flyswatter though). They were everywhere even surrounding our car when we were packing, they were at the beach too but in less number. Another thing that I didn't like was that we could clearly see our neighbors, there was vegetation behind our site but virtually no trees or plants in the line that divides the sites so you can see each other. The beach was nice but the bathrooms were dirty, only 5 stalls and like 7 showers do not suffice for all the people and families that go. They need to renovate the whole bathroom and most importantly hire somebody to clean it.

The pros were the closeness to the beach you can ride your bike or walk (quite long way if you decide to walk), and the closeness to other nice beaches like Rehoboth beach, the outlets, restaurants and so on. The campground has many walking and bike tracts and there is the ferry to Cape May, fishing pier and nature store, also the sites were big, well when we reserved we went for a large site and it was big enough for us.

I will go back but next time I will take everything to keep the flies away from me, actually something that works.

My wife and I camped there in a tent for a night. I am a fairly novice camper and it was my wife's first time camping.

Pluses:
The campground is very beautiful and well maintained. The area is absolutely beautiful. Someone said to me that they hope people do not find out about this because it will spoil it.
Its located only a mile from the ocean.
The staff both at the park is very helpful.
There were no problems with noise after hours from other campers. (Quiet time is 10 pm to 7 am)
Restrooms were clean and plentiful.

Negatives:
The spaces are small, close together and have an interesting layout. There are about 6 rows of campsites separated by paved roads. If you have a camper or rv you would parallel park on the road and then there is a camping space in the woods.
The only utility hookup is water, there is no electricity in the spaces.
Even though quiet time was enforced for people, I was woken up at 6:30 am by a garbage truck. I think that quiet time should be enforced for everyone. Not just campers.

Location:
The park can be difficult to get to, especially if you are driving from NJ. Going down, we left North Jersey at 3:30 pm on a Friday and did not get there until 8 pm. We took the NJ Turnpike down and once we got into Delaware, we had almost an hour of 5 to 10 miles per hour bumper to bumper traffic.

Going home on a Saturday night we took the Cape May Ferry. The park is located about 2 miles east of the ferry terminal in Lewes DE. We left the park at 6:50 pm and got to the terminal at 7pm. We had reservations for the 7:45 ferry, however when we got there, we were told that we could get on a ferry that was leaving in 5 minutes, which we did. Once we got into NJ, we got on the Parkway on exit 0. By the time we got to Morris county, it was near midnight. so it was a 5 hour ride home.

Inspite of all the driving, we both absolutely loved the campground and cannot wait to go back there again.

My Canadian family has just returned from what has been declared "Our best family vacation ever". Which is really something when you consider that we are competing against Walt Disney and Canada Wonderland. Among other things we stayed for 5 nights at the Cape Henlopen State Park Campground. Yes the campground is not perfect. Yes there were Mosquitoes and Horseflys that were quite a pest. Yes there is not any electricity. What we did find were huge treed lots (larger than any we have seen in Canada), amazing warm showers (which you really need after a day at the beach), incredible bike/inline skating/running/walking paths, and a beach that my children have declared the most incredible they have ever seen. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of everything and the fact that it is so close to Reoboth Beach and the tax free shopping Outlets (I have girls). The highlight of the entire time, and something we had hoped for but did not expect to really happen, was the 6pm dolphin swim right off the beach. One night about 20 of them came in close enough to shore for us to have a really amazing experience. I had heard that there were dolphins in the area but really did not expect to see any without taking a boat tour. Two of them swam within 20 feet of my youngest daughter who was only 10 feet from shore. This is just to say that we have already started planning our return trip for next summer and have started telling friends. We will bring our screened dining tent, bug spray and a battery charged fan next time (we were there during a 100 degree heat wave). Other than that we wouldn't change a thing.
