I don't even know where to begin telling my story about our stay but here goes... We selected Acorn Acres out of Woodalls campground directory for all the options it had on its sites and the sizes. I have a 37 ft. fifth wheel and it was just barely able to fit on our site, 1st we were greeted by a woman named Sis who apparently is the owner, and had the worst attitude we have ever come across in our 24 years of camping as a family. Her greeting was not well and there was no camper friendly atmosphere at the check in counter. Only after we paid for our site were we told we could not have cable tv. It was not available to our site, also could not use our ac,washer & dryer, tv, as we were told we could when I made the reservation. There were more rules and regulations for kids at the pool, and riding there bikes than a person in a correctional facility has. I had asked for a refund at this point after one night and was willing to leave, but to my surprise the overly friendly owner sis said that was not there policy, I tried to reason with her about the services not being what is advertised, sixty foot average campsite was only twenty feet wide, we could not put our awning out, nor could we have a campfire. On Sat afternoon we decided to leave this horrible facility and return to Vermont. I would not recommend at all this place to anyone traveling or vacationing they will be greatly disappointed.

Recently I went to Acorn Acres Campground in Bozrah CT.
It was not at all what I expected. The campground advertised itself as "Family Camping at its Best". I do not agree. There were many rules. I know campgrounds want you to be safe but it was a little overboard with its rules. Bikes can only be ridden in certain areas, and God forbid you pass a golf cart...you will get reprimanded by the owner if she is around. There are way too many golf carts in this campground too, AND it is not just the older campers using them...lots of young families driving here there and everywhere. We constantly had to tell our children to watch out for the golf carts.
They do have a beautiful pool-huge, cool zig zag shape. But it was not a fun pool. You could not jump in or climb out on the sides. You needed to use a ladder or the steps...even if
you were at the lower end...and an adult. There were what we
called "pool police" monitoring the pool. You could not splash...yes I said splash. It is a pool with water in it, but no splashing allowed! When has anyone ever gotten into a pool with "family" and not splashed. The pool police would give you a warning if you did. My husband got a warning. We were at the pool at one point where there were about 10 people in the pool...mostly kids and a few adults (big kids-hee hee) who were playing a game of Marco Polo. The owner (a woman named Sis) was the pool police at that time and told them all they would be kicked out of the pool if the continued to play. She stated the pool is for swimming. I went over and asked her what was wrong with Marco Polo...because it was not on the posted rule list. She told me "Because I said so" I was shocked and said excuse me...she said it again in slow motion like I was 5 yrs. old. Oh Boy was I ticked. I told her I would be sharing this information with other campers in a review. I also stated I would never be back there again. While I was having this conversation all the people in the pool had gotten out. The family fun was over. Thank goodness the next day we were leaving or it would have been a very rough camping trip.
The owner will not let you play miniature golf until she has given you directions on how to play...like how to stand and hold the putter. My guys even told her they already knew how to play she had them stay and listen.
The shower curtains are too small and bathrooms were not in great condition.
Activities for children were canceled on spur of the moment notice...such as bubble gum blowing contest. We waited and waited too. My kids were looking forward to that.
Entrance gate was broken, and a back gate was open during part of our stay.
The only plus for the campground I can think of is they gave out ribbons and trophies for certain activities it was an Olympic Themed week..
I think this is not the way Family Camping should be...but this is just the opinion of one usually very happy camper.

I live in Oakdale Connecticut, about ten minutes from Acorn Acres Campground. Our family camped there when our kids were growing up, and my husband and I have started going back with friends to camp. We, as in the past, have found the campground to be very clean and full of activities for all ages! Sis, the owner, and her employees are friendly and very eager to make your camping trip enjoyable! We camped down across from the cabins and bathrooms, in a tent, our friends in a camper. The bathrooms were very clean, in fact they were cleaned at least four times a day! Everyone is treated the same whether you are tent camping or motor home camping, with friendliness and respect, seasonal or weekend camping! We do not feel that this campground is outdated, if we wanted a resort campground we would go elsewhere. If you are looking for a campground that is down to earth and filled with fun and lots of activities for all ages this is the place to camp! They also have a hot tub, Olympic size pool, adult room and game room., in fact we are going back for Christmas in August.

Wow, where do I start - right from the get go we were "greeted" by the most miserable person I have ever met, the owner a person named "SIS". She barked a few orders at us, took our money - very bad first impression but wait it get worse. The rules list is about as long as your arm and basically tells you nothing is allowed. The kids are even restricted to ride their bikes in the playground area - they have to walk their bikes to the area where they can ride them. This place in run down, outdated and mismanaged. If you are one of the seasonal people you can pretty much do what you want. I met a maintenance guy there his name was Dennis I think, not sure - but I do know he was drunk at 10am and drinking and driving a pickup truck around the property. Oh and the parking rules if you are visiting you have to park before you get to the gate? You cannot drive in even if you have babies, handicapped or are elderly. Someone should really get the State after this place. My advice, stay away from this horrible place, your family deserves better.

First time at this campground. Went with three other friends. Staff treated us excellent. Paved roads, beautiful campground, very well kept. We will be going back soon. We have a motor home and don't use their bathrooms or showers, so cannot comment on them.

The campsite we camped at was very nice. The bathrooms were very dirty. The main bathroom had 1 shower. The sink did not work. There were no paper towels available to dry your hands at any of the bathrooms. There was no place to hang your clothes or set them down while taking a shower. The shower curtains were not big enough to give you privacy while taking a shower. Some of the shower curtains were even ripped. The lighting in the bathrooms was not very good. The pools diving board was broke. You were not allowed to jump or even dive into the deep end of the pool. There was no splashing allowed in the pool. The pool was not open to swim at the times it said it was supposed to be. The owner and some of the staff I thought were very rude. We had a very large group go on this camping trip we had about 36 people in our group and were promised an outhouse on our site because we were so far from the bathrooms. The outhouse never was put there. Our group was very disappointed with the campground and the reception we received from the staff. We will never be returning to Acorn Acres Campground again. I would advise anyone going to this area to stay away.

Hi I would like to forewarn anyone visiting the Acorn Acres campground near Mystic CT. We stayed there recently over the Memorial Day weekend, and were so disappointed that we almost left and rented a hotel room. It was horrible weather out 30 mile+ winds and torrential rains and we were tent camping in an open field. Staff never once even toured the field to check up on us. The only close facilities were pit toilets (Jonnie on the Spots), that I used as soon as we arrived and they were in squalid conditions with excrement on the seats and urine on the floor. They were never cleaned up to 4 days later when we left. At the end of the 4 days they were full to the top and completely unusable with no toilet paper. There were bathrooms on the premises but the next closest one was about a 1/2 mile walk and they were even worse. Someone threw up on the counter and that was not touched for days. The area is gorgeous and for the most part the fellow campers were pleasant, but it is obvious when you sign a declaration up front-yes they really make you do that, that they are not responsible for anything, that they take that seriously avoid this place at all costs!
