In-Town Camping with a Terrific Staff
Stayed in the tent area in July 1972, close quarters between tents. For an in-town campground, it was great. Met a fella at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb who worked there. Although they were full that night, he told us about another place for that night. We moved to Garden of the Gods Campground (GGCG) the next night. I had my own personal guide of some of the beautiful sites around area with Colorado Springs and fell in love with the whole package. Moved there with pointers from the staff still. Fell in love even more. Had to return to Illinois for my dad was seriously ill & & needed surgery. Had planned to return, but roommate had an old friend returning to the area. I visit the places and events that I was shown on the original trip because I love what brought me back to live there. I visit when I can. Staff was constantly painting, updating things, fixing what needed fixing, etc., & gave their personal favorites places in the area some people don't know about. Wish I'd kept in touch with the owner at the time. He & his staff made my in-town camping great and felt looked out for me beyond what they had to do.

Campers Beware
Well, Campers beware - we pulled up to Mary's Lake and literally started laughing because their website is SO deceptive. They make it out to be some quaint, quiet, peaceful campsite near Estes Park. Well, it's a parking lot - - with limited trees - ZERO shade. Actually, there was a barbed wire fence 20 feet from the site. We could not stay there, unbelievably deceptive from their website. The good news is, there are many campsites within 15 miles of Estes Park that are free and very nice. I guess if you have a large RV and need a parking lot campsite, Mary's Lake would work. But if you are a camper with your family - find a different campsite, there a many to choice from in the area. We never even got out of the car at Mary's - - we drove about 15 miles to Bunce School road and had the best time and best campsite for free.

Where are the zombies?
Hi, I tent camped for about a month in NM, AZ, UT. Mesa Verde, CO was the last place before heading home. The campground looks neglected and most of the sites were empty. Judging from run down retro service buildings in need of updating, it seemed like campers stopped coming back in the 70's. No hot water in showers during our stay so call ahead of time to make sure they've resolved this problem (unless you can tune out the sound of shrieking children in the neighboring stalls). Mesa Verde is ideal for day trips, which explains the large no. of tourists at the cliff dwellings but ghost town feel at the camp sites. If you're tent camping, beware of bears. On the main road to the camp sites we saw a bear cage and were told the bear tracker guy failed to show up. I was told a black bear and her cub approached a tent (night time) but was deterred by campers' dog. Had I been camping with my boyfriend or Fido, I would have appreciated all the wildlife and and solitude this campground has to offer. But as a single mom with a small child, I ended up sleeping in the car the second night because the strong wind shaking my tent resembled a hungry bear looking for a yogi snack. I should mention that I was the only tent camper at my site everyone else was in an RV. I did notice a few tent campers on other loops but not a lot. Be aware that there is a stiff fine for leaving coolers out, even if they are empty as they are bear magnets. Hope this review helps someone.

Decent
The correct name of this property is San Juan Motel RV Park & Campground. The motel has rooms of different age, size, and price. My wife and I stayed in one of their newer rooms. It was ample in size and very clean. The mattresses were OK, but could use an upgrade. The motel lacks wireless internet. The room seemed overpriced, but that may be true for all of Pagosa Springs. The owner was very helpful in recommending an excellent restaurant (Alley House Grille). We'd stay here again, but only while passing through town, not for a vacation stay.

Quiet and private
We stayed in the Rustic Cabin at Arrowhead Point after we decided hotels in Buena Vista cost more than we wanted to pay for a night of just passing through. We arrived after the office had closed, but the proprietor hadn't given us on us - an envelope with keys and directions to the cabin were taped to the office door. The cabin was up a steep hill, about 100 yards from the office. Toilets and showers were near the office. In the cabin, there was a double-sized bed and adult-sized bunk beds, all with good, comfortable mattresses. Bring your own pillow, sheets and blankets. The cabins are very cozy, so there is very little room to move around inside of them. A picnic table and fire pit was right outside the door. A motion-sensor light attached to the cabin helped us to see our way in after dark. Inside the cabin, there was a table lamp next to the double bed. The Rustic Cabin is far off the highway and in a part of the campground that has tent sites. Besides being quiet, it is very dark, which is great for stargazing, but a flashlight is helpful to go down to the bathrooms at night. Although the campground map shows a porta-pottie in the area of the Rustic Cabin, there was none.
